S1000DTM – DTD Versions 1.7, (1.7x,) 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.0, 4.0 ...
Since we started producing documentation in SGML according to S1000DTM we were confronted with different versions. Furthermore, there are different guidelines for the handling of DTDs for each project.
What happens, if you
- want to use the features of a newer version (e.g. hot spots)?
- use applications like FrameMaker® and you have developed the layout for a particular version?
- want to have all documents in the same version?
- have a retrieval system which supports only a particular version?
The solution is data transformation. To carry out transformations fast and correctly, various conditions must be met:
- Experience in different DTD versions of S1000DTM
- Perfect teamwork and good communication between technical writers, information managers and software engineers
- Experience in the compilation and alteration of DTDs
- Awareness of the consequences of DTD modifications
This is especially important during the analysis of given data and the new allocation of information.
